Flying the Nest

Find me on:
Its been quite a year for The Cake Nest. Twelve months ago we packed up our mixing bowls and whisks from our kitchen table and moved the Nest to a state of the art commercial kitchen in Furness Vale. Making the move was a huge undertaking, although we were fortunate as Steve used his past Architectural experiences to project manage the transition into the bakery making sure we had the right mix of kitchen, office and storage space to meet our needs.

Furness Vale was an ideal location for us, apart from being near to our home, the building is powered with solar panels makingthe delicious cakeswe bake powered by the sun. We also felt strongly that we wanted to keep things local and be able to employ local people. Now we are a team of five, with Lindsay, Ben and Jen joining us. We feel very fortunate to have them with us on this amazing journey and extending their hours as our workload increases has been reaffirming on our decision to move. We always felt that taking on staff was a big responsibility as we feel they are part of our family, we didn't want to find we had over stretched ourselves and let anyone down.

In the July of last year we achieved our SALSA (Safe and Local Supplier Approval) accreditation, this gave us the professionalism we needed to grow. We can now supply to big shops but more importantly it has put best practice systems in place to make sure our products are always made consistently and in a safe and legal manner.

Growing and learning are a major part of the values of The Cake Nest as we encourage and support our staff to undertake courses and research any ideas they have. Abi completed the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Course at the beginning of 2014, which pulled the rug from under her feet a little but inevitably made us stronger. This is continued with our business mentor and the business best friends Abi met along the way.

All our team are encouraged to share new ideas they have. Ben thought of the simple pairing of tea and cake with our vintage cups for a personal. Lindsay’s strength is in gluten free cakes. There will be a new line launched shortly but in the meantime we are enjoying our cake testing sessions. Jen is our newest member but is a joy to work with, her sunny disposition is infectious and she’s full of ideas.

Before I go on too much, I think you will agree that it has been a busy year, you can read more about it in Derbyshire Life but now it’s time for our biggest step forward, our new website. We do hope you like it. We have spent a lot of time developing this, learning from your feedback. We wanted to make sure your customer experience was at the top of our list. We think Fig Creative have done an amazing job, what do you think? After all if it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t be here. So does it work for you? Your comments are really important now, thank you for all your support.

And don’t worry the the cake lady is still here, although now she’s busy juggling the phones and website along with the cakes!
